#Berlinale2018 continues with a great mix of inspiring cinema from all over the world. Our reviewer @nadjabee from Berlin:
Berlinale day 3 - #RupertEverett or #IsabelleHuppert? Both actors stay true to themselves in readily recognisable roles. Everett both stars and directs in #TheHappyPrince, a lyrical but troubled account of #OscarWilde’s last three years. It depicts a painful but beautiful, if at times seedy, deeper slide from grace. Huppert is the perfect Série Noire heroine, in a film - ‘Eva’ - which shouts ‘James Hadley Chase’ well before his name appears in the end credits. Both films are well-crafted works, and neither makes particularly strong claims on the heart.
As a counterpoint to these dark tales of lives almost wilfully ruined, several films screened today come as a cry from the heart, for justice and recognition. Aleksei German’s stunning ‘Dovlatov’ presents a tableau of the Soviet Union in the early 1970s, as the young writer Sergei Dovlatov writes about Soviet life but finds his work banned. It’s an important work, by a director who carries the legacy of his late father (they share the same name), famous for his films depicting life during the Stalin era.
An old political scandal is dragged back into the spotlight in Ruth Beckermann’s #documentary, 'Waldheim’s Waltzes’. Kurt Waldheim, the former UN secretary-general was a man with many skeletons in his cupboard. When he campaigned for the Austrian presidency, in 1986, those skeletons got dragged out one by one.
‘Theatre of War’, by Lola Arias, is a moving and fascinating account of recaptured memories - former British and Argentinian war veterans meet up, and re-discover a shared past. It’s a tale of multiple reconciliations - with the ‘other’ but also with past selves. It also includes a great disco scene, to a Rod Stewart track - guess which one... The film complements a play which will tour the UK this year.
Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword! .#oscarwilde#yeteachmankillsthethingheloves
