I love eating, there is no doubt about that. Food makes me happy and if you’ve seen me eat, you know I can consume as much as a grown man. I used to say that I worked out so I could eat and drink whatever I wanted. While this is partly true, I never could understand why I wasn’t getting the results in the gym that I wanted.
When I took a deeper look into what I was eating, how often I was eating, and the proportions of what I ate is when I truly began to see why my results weren’t there. I wasn’t eating often enough, I ate too many processed foods and carbs, and not enough protein. •
There are many “diets” out there, and I’ve tried many of them. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of them are good, Keto for example. But what I’ve found is that I needed something that worked for me, my lifestyle, and didn’t restrict me from having an occasional treat that would throw off my game. I needed to find something that I could stick with.
That is where going back to the basics of getting adequate amounts of proteins, carbs, and fats (otherwise known as macros) in the form of whole foods really benefitted me. This method is known as counting macros or IIFYM. Also, learning that eating 15-20grams of protein every 3 hours helps keep the body in an anabolic state (burning fat and building lean muscle).
Eating protein every 3 hours seems difficult, especially in a busy profession as a nurse and as a mom. When possible, I try to get my protein in the form of whole foods such as Greek yogurt, chicken, jerky etc but there are times I just don’t have time to sit down and eat something. In these cases, I can usually find time to break away for 2 minutes to mix up a Level 1 protein shake so I don’t break that anabolic state.
You’d be surprised how much food you can actually consume when you stay away from processed foods and eat “real foods” in the proper macro proportions. I eat more food now than I have ever and I’m getting the results I want.
