day 32 of #100daysians: the camera
tourists take a lot of photos, but asian tourists get made fun of, or sometimes ridiculed, for it.
it may come to two things. for one, asians generally work long hours and don't take a lot of vacation. so when they get the chance, maybe they go overboard on photos, but it stems from everyone's natural curiosity and excitement when they are somewhere foreign.
lastly, there is something called "having face" in chinese culture, which is having an admirable social status amongst family and friends. by taking a photo at the eiffel tower, the colosseum, what have you - you can share with others for their approval, and perhaps a bit of envy.
it's weird writing this out, but reputation is a big deal in chinese culture that it spills over into something like this. maybe that's another factor in our innate competitivenes. jury's still out, but maybe coming to closer terms understanding what "having face" truly entails.
