#MuscleLabquicktip (Pregnancy and exercise) “Can you exercise when pregnant?” “Is it safe?” “Any tips?” Yes, yes and yes. Exercising when pregnant can be very beneficial for mum and baby! Before undergoing any exercise I advise you speak to your health visitor first. It is not considered dangerous to exercise while pregnant, providing the exercise isn’t too strenuous. There a few things you SHOULD NOT DO; 1. DONT perform any exercises that require you to lie down flat on your back, this can cause you to feel faint and put pressure on your spine. 2. DONT exercise in hot weather or extreme temperatures. 3. DONT take part in any contact sports or exercises were risk of falling is high. 4. DONT try to exercise at your former intensity; instead, do what's most comfortable for you now. Low impact exercises are encouraged versus high impact activities. Alot is common sense really, if you were not very active before you became pregnant I wouldn’t suggest suddenly starting any strenuous exercise, keep it light and slow and only for as long as you feel comfortable. Some things to DO; 1. Always warm up and cool down thoroughly. 2. Drink plenty of water! 3. Make sure you are eating enough calories, we know we need more calories than normal when exercising, but, this is exaggerated even more so when pregnant! Keep track of your food intake. 4. The exercises considered the most beneficial while pregnant are swimming, fast paced walking, cycling machine and step or elliptical machines. These activities carry very little risk of injury, they deliver a great full body workout and can be continued until birth. Hope this helped!
