Brain basics continued! Almost everything we do as health and fitness professionals is built around movement. Most educational curricula are still oriented toward the peripheral movement systems - muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, fascia, etc. However, this can be a limiting view because the peripheral system can only do what it is ordered to do by the central nervous system. For us, this means that every health and fitness professional needs to know movement neurology as the foundation for everything we do! This diagram is a simplified view of what is called the final common pathway of movement. It shows that movement, while seemingly simple, actually requires enormous neural resources and health in order to be performed well. You can see multiple tracts/pathways are involved. A few key ones are: 1. Corticospinal Tract - Primary tract for activating the motor system in voluntary movements. 2. CorticoPontoCerebellar - This tract carries the intended movement plan from the motor cortex to the contralateral cerebellum. 3. Vestibulospinal Tract - Working with the cerebellum the vestibulospinal tract helps set the tone of the extensor/posterior chain muscles to maintain posture and balance. Glad to get down to #crossfit2012 this morning for their #WOD, a 20 minute AMRAP of 20 #doubleunders and 2 #barmuscleups. Practicing the transition from the extended position to snapping the hips up to the bar is something that I've been working on for awhile and it was great to get a Coach's perspective on the movement. The whole workout didn't go to plan in the end with a rolled ankle but still made best use of the time on the bar.
