Peugeot 405 Mi16x4.
Nowadays, automotive industry is a very big business in hands of few companies. In early 90´s the situation was still different… this is the reason why I like 90´s cars... As motor industry consolidation continues apace, more and more brands are concentrated in the hands of a few giant players. This usually leads to component sharing and the dilution of previously distinctive brands. Today is very difficult to find cars as 405, this isn´t just a “consumable product”. The Mi16x4 was one of this good models… It was powered by a 1.9-liter four-cylinder XU9 engine also used in the 205 GTi (among others) but fitted with a 16-valve head. The engine made 160 horsepower at 6,500 rpms, enough to send the 405 from zero to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds and could reach a top speed of 220 km/h (this engine was later used by Peugeot as the basis for the engine in the 206 WRC, winning two championships). 53% of the power was sent to the front wheels and 47% was transferred to the rear axle by an all-wheel drive system equipped with a Torsen rear differential. Interestingly, the car was equipped with a self-leveling rear suspension that was similar to the one found in the Citroën BX, helped the car keep its composure even under heavy acceleration and braking. Also, the Mi16x4 was full of little details, just one example: the tyres were specially developed by Pirelli for this model. Asymmetric tread patterns using hard and soft compounds were designed to give grippy, dry road cornering as well as good traction in wet or muddy conditions.

A suspensão hidropneumática do Citroën DS permite que o motorista escolha 5 níveis de altura para o carro, incluindo deixar o carro bem baixo, como na foto. Com essa suspensão a troca de pneu era simples: bastava ajustar a suspensão na altura máxima, inserir um suporte na carroceria próximo do pneu furado e em seguida colocar a suspensão no nível mais baixo, fazendo o pneu furado ficar suspenso.
