While a very tragic figure, Benjamin Grimm's Thing gets the bulk of the comic relief in the Fantastic Four books. Always crackin' wise and quick with a joke during dire moments, Thing's way of dealing with dangerous or unbelievable situations is to rely on the personality he fostered as a Yancy Street youth.
This particular group of panels I found pretty funny.
When the skies over New York become full of flames, the panicked citizens catch a glimpse of the FF's Johnny Storm flying past. In their frenzy, they blame him for the fires about to consume them (they have no idea The Watcher is projecting flames, and later space debris, to hide and protect the earth from an unknown danger) and attack him with a firehose, putting out the Human Torch!
Though always busting each other's chops like brothers do, there is no way that Ben will let anybody hurt his young friend and teammate, so he gets into the fray in Johnny's defense! He dispatches this loudmouth bruiser in typical Thing style! "PLINKK!"
These panels appear in Fantastic Four issue 48, titled "The Coming of Galactus". Script by Stan Lee, inks by Joe Sinnott, lettering by Artie Simek, and story and pencils by Jack "King" Kirby.
It's always said that Ben Grimm was the character that Kirby felt most resembled himself. (I'm sure he meant in personality and not in monstrous orange rock complexion!)
He's definitely one of MY favorites! What are some of YOUR favorite Thing moments or stories?!
