The self-driving car project started in 2009 to develop technology that could make our roads safer and improve mobility for everyone.
Our first challenge was to prove this technology could work. The team developed custom software and made hardware modifications to a Toyota Prius to test early prototypes of self-driving technology.
In 2015, we explored what a fully self-driving vehicle might look like and designed a vehicle from the ground up, nicknamed “Firefly”. In December 2016, with over 2 million miles of self-driving experience on the roads, the self-driving car project graduated from X.
Now known as Waymo, it’s a self-driving technology company with a clear mission: to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. Last week Waymo took a big step forward towards safer roads, and better access to transportation for all – their fully self-driving vehicles are test-driving on public roads, without anyone in the driver’s seat.
