I told Chris a few weeks ago that I’ve always wanted to start a record collection. I’ve been obsessed with music for so long, it just seems like a logical thing for me to have a collection of. So I was pretty thrilled today when the mail came and he told me to open the package and I found this. SO happy to say that this is my first one. @thecjohnson did so good this Valentine’s Day. Thank you. I love you! #brandnew#dejaentendu#myfirstvinyl
So let talk about the curious case of Brand New and separating the art from the artists. Late last year Frontman Jesse Lacey was accused of sexual misconduct with at the time, a minor. Many people feel as if they can’t enjoy the music of Lacey after these allegations and I can totally understand why as I feel a bit iffy supporting a band linked to these type of allegations. However, I am incredibly biased in the debate as I’m a massive fan of the band and I can still enjoy the work of a performer/artist without necessary condoning their actions or even liking them personally. If I applied the stance of boycotting art based on how I feel about the creator then I’m sure would be questioning the art of some of the most important artists of all time. So with that disclaimer out the way lets talk about how great Brand new’s 2nd album Deja Entendu. This is a massive step up stylistically from their first record which was very much Pop Punk meets Morrisey when it came to influences affecting the sound. Whilst still having that same angst and pure bile and hatred that the first album had, Deja is a much more mature effort sonically, having much more alternative rock/90’s eco flair to it. They also expanded into other areas whether it be the funky dance floor bassline of ‘Sic transit Gloria’ or experimenting with the quiet/loud dynamics on songs such as ‘Jaws Theme Swimming’ or the 7 minute epic ‘Good to Know That If I Ever Need Attention All I Have to Do Is Die’. Lyrically this song explore themes of love, death and relationships and in album closer ‘Crack the Sky’s case, all 3 within the context of a single song. There are vocal hooks here that will be stuck in your head for years to come and lyrics that demand your attention and analysis. In most bands catalogue this would be there magnum opus but its not even my favourite Brand new album, that story is for another day…..
