Intermittent fasting vs “regular” eating by @smurray_32 ➖ Fat loss: Intermittent Fasting (IF) is no “magic” diet, just an eating schedule that has you “backload” kcals to later in the day. Studies even show that when kcals are held constant between groups (i.e. ISOCALORIC diet) IF shows no added fat loss benefits over diets with a higher meal frequency. ➖ Gains: As IF involves fasting for ~16+hrs a potential negative of IF is a reduced protein (PRO) feeding frequency. As PRO feeding is linked to stimulating MPS it could be hypothesised that you’d compromise your ability to gain LBM as you’d forgo 1-2 chances to stimulate MPS. Whether this would then translate into inferior gains is up for debate as studies have shown that when sticking to a 16:8 eating schedule, one can maintain LBM when in a kcal deficit assuming adequate PRO while lifting weights. Furthermore, studies have shown total DAILY protein intake is the strongest predictor of muscular hypertrophy rather than the TIMING thus if adopting IF, prioritising TOTAL PRO is advised. ➖ Appetite: IF can benefit fat loss INDIRECTLY by aiding in reducing appetite thus resulting in VOLUNATARY kcal reduction. Therefore IF can be beneficial for those struggling with hunger as it makes it easier for you to ADHERE to sustaining a kcal deficit needed for fat loss. ➖ Other adaptations: There is evidence that supports the use of IF for increasing insulin sensitivity, test, GH & reducing risk of developing life threatening diseases with studies even linking it to increased lifespan. ➖ Conclusion: IF isn’t magic but can be a useful if struggling with hunger. In terms of LBM gains, it may not be OPTIMAL but most definitely doesn’t mean you can’t make “close to” maximal gains. I tracked calories as best I could, but there was a lot of eating out and grazing on snacks. I was expecting days to get back to my low weight. In reality, I'm already there. While this was a positive experience, this is the perfect example of why I plan to track my intake even when I meet my goal. I'm bad at estimating what I'm eating, even when I'm paying attention.

🍗 How to Weigh Chicken 🍗 ⠀⠀ A common question that I get regarding meal prep and macros is this: ⠀⠀ 💬 “Max, should I weigh my chicken raw or cooked?” ⠀⠀ Good question, considering raw and cooked chicken differ in weight. ⠀⠀ 🏝 This is primarily because, through the cooking process, water and other juices in the meat evaporate. ⠀⠀ Therefore, the short answer the your question is: ⠀⠀ 🥩 You should weigh your chicken raw. Especially considering most nutrition labels present the nutrient data with regard to one serving of raw chicken. ⠀⠀ However, I realize that’s not always realistic. ⠀⠀ If you can’t weigh your chicken raw, don’t stress! Here’s what to do: ⠀⠀ 1️⃣ If weighing your chicken cooked, multiply the serving size by 1.4 and use that nutrition data. ⠀⠀ For example, 3 oz of raw chicken is 105 calories, and 3 oz of cooked chicken (105 calories * 1.4) is 145 calories, give or take. ⠀⠀ Make sense? ⠀⠀ 2️⃣ The other thing you can do, assuming you don’t like basic arithmetic haha, is simply log your chicken the same way you weigh it. ⠀⠀ Here’s what I mean: ⠀⠀ Some nutrition apps have already done that basic arithmetic for you. ⠀⠀ So instead of searching “chicken breast”, search for “chicken breast cooked” and log that instead. ⠀⠀ 💎 At the end of the day, consistency is better than perfection but the more accurate you can be, the more likely you’ll make progress at the rate you desire. ⠀⠀ Got it? 🤪 Good! ⠀⠀ 👉🏼 Questions about any of this? Quick Maths #Repost @soheefit ・・・ There are many many equations you’ll find out there on how to set your own macros; this is one very straightforward method. The best choice is to base your dieting calories off of your CURRENT maintenance intake (the number of Calories you consume to maintain your bodyweight); if you don’t know this right off the bat, I would recommend tracking your intake for 3 days minimum to find out. Otherwise, you can use multiply your current bodyweight in pounds by 10-13 (start with the higher end if you’re younger, more active, and have lower body fat). • In the example scenario above, I have a 130lb individual who is currently maintaining her bodyweight on around 2,000 Calories per day. I set her protein at just enough to help maintain lean body mass while she diets down so she can have more room for carbs and fats. With the remaining Calories, I allot her higher carbs as she is physically active and she enjoys a higher carb diet. With 95g protein and 220g carbs, that leaves me with enough Calories for around 50g fats. • A few points to drive home: 1️⃣Setting starting Calories as low as possible is not ideal. Most individuals (except for the very obese, who can afford to drop Calories lower) should try to eat as MUCH food as possible while still seeing fat loss progress. 2️⃣It is absolutely possible to shed body fat while consuming ample carbohydrates, provided you stay in a calorie deficit. 3️⃣The above example is ONE setup of many that can work. 4️⃣You do not HAVE to track your macros in order to shed body fat, but it is the most precise approach. Unless your current eating behaviors leave a whole lot of room for improvement, I’d recommend at least loosely tracking. 5️⃣Prioritize dietary adherence. A “perfect” program on paper is pointless if you can only stick to it half the time. Hunger Hack No.4 - Avoid liquid calories. #Repost @revivestronger ・・・ 🍊Fruit juice is healthy right? Well I’m not going to say it’s not, but I tend to recommend people don’t drink it. Why? Because studies have shown that our bodies are not good at compensating for liquid calories, meaning we’re more likely to overeat. 🍎 💦Hence the recommendation that you consume a whole fresh fruit (which we can all surely agree is likely a healthy thing to do) with water is going to help you when dieting. You’re chewing & taking more time over your food, this will make it more satisfying & inherently filling. 🍎 👅I don’t know about you but I could quite easily drink a bottle of delicious smoothie in seconds, which could contain 100s of calories. Whereas a decently sized apple & bottle of water is going to take me much longer & there is little chance I’m going to go overboard & eat multiple apples. 🍎 🐄Interestingly milk & it’s associated proteins (whey, casein) has been found to lead to decent satiety. With casein protein being a particularly decent filler. This is likely down to the associated protein found within & the fact casein is slower digesting. 🍎 ❓Do you drink any of your calories when dieting? As I have some new followers I thought I would tell you all a little bit about myself! Sorry if you’ve already read this but I’m repeating myself 😂 So my name is Emma, I’m 26 and I’m from Birmingham. I married my amazing husband in April 2016 and I gave birth to our beautiful daughter Ruby in August 2017. I have always somewhat struggled with my weight, being short and naturally curvy I have always had to work hard to stay in the healthy range for my height. In preparation for my wedding day I lost 2.5 stone with slimming world and walking and felt amazing in my dress. However on my honeymoon I gained a few pounds so went back to slimming world and lost those pounds and an extra half a stone taking my weight loss to 3 stone. I maintained my weight until I went to New York in November 2016 and fell pregnant with Ruby. I tried to eat sensibly through my pregnancy however I still gained a load of weight so now here I am 6 months postpartum ready to lose this baby weight once and for all! I am back on slimming world/calorie counting and exercising daily as I know this works for me. I have 18lbs to take me to target and I hope to achieve this by June! Is right in some sense, yes that statement is true. - However, most people fail using that strategy because they think it means, eating pop tarts and protein shakes all day (that’s an exaggeration but you get my point). Most people forget that when it comes to losing fat or gaining muscle, there’s another variable that should be controlled. - That’s HUNGER. You see, when you’re trying to lose fat, you’ll most likely end up hungry sometimes, at those moments it’s key to have some low calorie high filling foods, so you can stay full until your next big meal. I got you! Check out the left side of this graph! - When it comes to building muscle and gaining weight, it’s a trick to eat more less filling foods so you can eat more food. I remember the times when I had to eat 3.6k calories and I had to eat almost until I was vomiting. That’s not funny. What did I mess up? I ate super filling foods.. What can you do to avoid this? You can eat 100% “healthy” foods all day long and struggle to lose weight if you’re eating too many calories. - But let me explain... - Just because food quantity (aka calories & portions) matters most for weight loss, it doesn’t mean food quality (aka vitamins & minerals) is irrelevant. Losing and maintaining a healthy body weight is one part of being healthy, but so is ensuring you’re strong plenty of nutrient-dense foods full of fiber & micronutrients 🍎🥗 - So, what does all this mean? - It means you need to find a balance that works for YOU. - The majority of your food choices come from micronutrient-dense whole foods.
