Getting some help learning to backflip on the sand from my buddies @fabianogiovani03, @tom_boiis, and @dani.bullg on Batu Bolong Beach, Canggu, Bali.

At the beginning of 2017 I started practicing backflips for the first time in my life. I began at Bounce Bali in Canggu on the trampolines then moved to the air mattress at Superhuman Fitness in Seminyak. I had a 2017 goal of being able to do both a standing backflip on the ground and a running backflip off a hard vertical surface like a tree or a wall. I made a lot of progress last year, but I didn’t hit my goal. The travels I went on through the middle of the year left me without a good place to keep practicing, so I didn’t do anything for months, and picked back up again when I returned to Bali late last year. The guys invited me to do some flip practice on the beach on my last night in Bali so I had the opportunity to get in one final training session before the end of the year.
This was my first time trying to backflip on something that wasn’t foam, a trampoline, or air mattress. It took a bit of courage and some help from the guys to do my first few, but after I built up my confidence I was doing them on my own. My form and technique is still sloppy, I can’t quite stick the landing, and I still have a ways to go before I’m ready to attempt a standing backflip from a hard surface, but I made progress.
I was able to train again recently at a nearby gymnastics gym in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I will hopefully go there a few more times before I leave Chiang Mai to continue training. And now that I have some experience practicing on the sand, I’ll be able to use that as a training ground in the future.
So I’m basically kicking this goal one year forward and re-setting it for 2018. I’m not going to give up on it though. It has been a lifelong dream of mine to be able to do this. I’ve been learning this slowly. Much more slowly than most things, which has been frustrating for me because I usually learn things quickly. But I’m determined to keep doing it until I get it. And I don’t think it’s too far off now.
Thanks for the invitation and all the help guys. I appreciate you all so much!
