Lumière London 2018 x Samsung Galaxy S8 phone.
I'm often asked for advice about which camera to buy, what equipment helps me make a good shot, or the assumption that my photos look the way they do because of the camera I use. We often forget that in 2018 we have amazing cameras in our pockets, as part of our phones - the most important part is learning how to use them and how to "see". That comes from experience and taking every opportunity to capture photos.
I went to the incredible Lumière light show across London after my class, spontaneous and without camera to hand. And how refreshing it was to not be lumbered with a heavy DSLR and just use my phone camera which I had written off for any serious work! For sure I had to work harder, get used to the wider field of view and getting closer to the subject. Are the photos technically perfect? No, but they're better than I thought. The real key is to "see" and find a new angle of interest - don't be afraid to stand where other tourists aren't or to capture an angle no-one else is trying. I found that other spectators followed my lead once I tried a different angle. Equipment is no barrier to photography.
