Recently suffered a strain in my gastrocnemius (calf) last Sunday and have been treating it consistently since then with some @cuptherapy @grastontechnique , consistency followed by some low grade pails and rails for the gastroc @functionalrangeconditioning , wearing rocktape and compression sock to manage swelling... I was able to do some Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) using my @gobstrong cuffs (👀 the straps on my thigh?) I chose to use BFR here in hopes to enhance the muscular performance of my calf by increasing activation of the working tissues. The limiting good delivery to and from my calf. In an article written by Brendan Scott, “Exercise with Blood Flow Restriction: An updated Evidence Based Approach for Enhanced Muscular Development,” they mention that using BFR with low load resistance (20-40 % 1RM) can enhance the morphological and strength responses. Blood Flow Restriction Training This method of training goes way back to the 70's. The idea is to allow arterial blood flow to a region while restricting venousreturn. Intensity Techniques: Blood-Flow Restriction or Occlusion Training - - Popular in physical therapy for its ability to get vast amount of blood flow to muscles with very light load, BFRT has made its way into bodybuilding and can be seen used by some of the most reliable minds in the biz (@gregnuckols specifically comes to mind) - - There is nothing I’ve ever done to induce a pump like the one from BFRT. A couple of recommendations: try to choose exercises that target the end range of motion - think a Triceps Pushdown instead of an Overhead Triceps Extension or a Preacher Curl instead of an Incline DB Curl. - - The band used to induce the occlusion should be between a 6/10-8/10 in tightness and load should be 40-60%. Obviously a tighter band would mean a lighter load and vice versa. This method also uses much higher reps than your typical training. Whereas your normal sets will be 8-20 reps on average, this method uses sets of 20-30 reps. BIG ARMS CHEAT SHEET by @jmaxfitness - Do you want to add an inch to your arms this month? Then here's how to do it: - Train arms 3x per week. Two of the days will be upper body days hitting all the big compound movements. Things like close grip bench press, rows, close grip chinups, and military press, and then end the workout with incline dumbbell curls and lying triceps extensions. Day 1 will be heavy (4-6 reps), Day 2 will be moderate (6-10 reps). - On your third day, you'll just do arms isolation exercises and the focus will be to get a HUGE pump. Train in the 8-20 rep range, and use intensification techniques such as dropsets, rest pauses, and blood flow restriction training. - Lastly, you'll need to eat to build muscle. You can see by my facial expressions that I was surprised to see my muscles again. 😂 . BFR training may be one of my favorite training days. Upper body BFR training, that is. 💪 . Blood flow restriction training is a rehabilitation technique that has been around for over 20 years. It has proven to be a highly effective tool at eliciting adaptations in muscles at low resistance. The bodybuilding community quickly gravitated towards this method, realizing its potential for increasing muscle size. With this method, try restricting blood flow to muscles such as biceps, triceps, calves, and quadriceps. If you do not have special blood flow restriction cuffs or bands you can use knee wraps or voodoo floss bands (shown). With wraps, use a tension of roughly 7 out of 10 when tying off, and a 5 out of 10 for voodoo floss. Using roughly half the weight you would normally use for 10-15 reps, perform 3-5 sets of 15 reps each with 30 second rest break between sets. Bands should be worn for no more than 5 minutes. Disclaimer: Use caution when performing this method, especially if you have a history of blood clots. Want an insane arm pump while maintaining joint health? Kill the muscles and spare the joints with blood flow restriction training! Blood flow restriction bands maintain arterial blood flow while restricting venous return. As a result of this, growth stimulators and nutrients are delivered to the targeted muscles and are effectively "trapped" during the exercise. This allows (forces) you to use a lighter resistance, sparing your joints. Lately I've been starting arm day with the bands, using light weight for superset biceps and triceps exercises - about 6-8 sets of 12-15 reps each. This creates a great pump and promotes hypertrophy. After that I'll take off the bands and do a couple more supersets of different biceps and triceps exercises - same rep range. That's what gave me the pump you see here.
