Today I was training for my triathlon in May. I felt so fresh considering I played football yesterday and ran so much! So today I set PBs on the bike, 20km in 24:50 and then I ran 5km in 26:45. The run is nowhere near where I want it to be, but I’m still getting used to going on the bike straight into the run 🚴‍♂️🏃‍♂️

In my joy of discovering the empty gym just off Carnaby Street yesterday I forgot how busy clapham junction gets on a Sunday, but I just couldn't walk away from Andrew Marr this morning! By the time I got the gym the weight room was heaving so I found myself a little spot on the floor with a barbell and a set of weights and played around with what my shoulders were capable of after nearly 2 months away from strength training. R E T R A C T I O N What is key to any Deadlift? A straight and neutral spine in order to protect the verterbrae from any potential stress. And how do we ensure this happens? By training and conditioning the muscles with in the back to be able to handle heavy loads. Specifically the cases that I have been seeing lately is the strength and stability, or lack of, of the Rhomboid muscles. The Rhomboids are a set of muscles, major & minor, that lie deep to the trapezius. They appear as parallel bands of Rhomboid shape that pass inferioraly and laterally from the spines of vertebrae C7 - T5 to the Scapula. The rhomboids along with the Levator scapulae, are chiefly responsible for the elevation, adduction and rotation of the scapula downward. Essentially these muscles are responsible for the retraction of your shoulders and opening of your chest to ensure a neutral spine during a deadlift. Pictured is an exercise that in my opinion has a strong Rhomboid contraction, this exercise is a variation of the lat pull down, combining the movenents of both a lat pull down and a face pull. Changing the angle of the pull down and the direction of the pull aids in the emphasis of engagement from the Rhomboids, but as with all exercises a strong mind to muscle connection is crucial. I believe with out a strong mind to muscle connection bigger, stronger muscles tend to take over and in this case it tends to be the Latissimus Dorsi, this can cause the Rhomboid muscles to become deconditioned and undertrained. Another exercise that I find engages the Rhomboid a lot is a the "Pendlay Row", a variation of the bent over row. Do you train your Rhomboid muscles?
