An elegant steel staircase spanning 4.5m from ground to first floor is the central feature of Armaniâs flagship Manchester store. The staircase was designed under a time-limited shop-fit contract in response to an initial brief from Armani that it should have no visible means of support.
The store is triangular in plan with two walls constructed predominantly from glass. The staircase was developed to fit into the pointed junction of these two transparent walls. Elliott Wood produced a series of column-free design solutions for the staircase; detailed computer analysis was undertaken to minimise supports.
The final design solution uses two slender steel hangers to suspend the steel staircase from the soffit above. Further analysis enabled additional refinements to the overall design and enabled the engineers to minimise the number and size of components used to fabricate the staircase. Elliott Wood also detailed the junction of the staircase with the floor to reflect that of the storeâs furniture.
The sleek metal handrail was machined from a solid piece of metal, which was then slotted over the glass balustrade to conceal the junction between the two; a similar slotted-detail was developed for the base of the balustrade.

This was one of my favorite projects on our current home, despite being the most labor-intensive. Not going to lie, it was hard af! The irony in it all? When we replaced the fan, we saw that the original color of the beams was the same brown we'd struggled to create! I'll never understand why someone painted over them. We used #stainableprimer and #minwaxgelstain to accomplish this feat! As always, shout out to my stud @jbaeza22 for risking his neck to help me. #beams#diy#reno#rehab#rustic#home#cozyhome
Turns out, I DID have the flu. Itâs been terrible! ð¤ð¤§ð· Thank goodness Iâm on the mend now!
Anyone else have trouble finding that perfect inspiration picture? ðð¼ââï¸ I have this specific vision in my head but I have the hardest time finding something that looks just like it. Maybe itâs a little unique, but I hope that doesnât cause issues with my future contractor! Haha!
These beams are gorgeous! ð I love the way they have that slight curve to them. And the finish work on the edges. Just beautiful! These even face the right direction that the ones on my house will be. Although, mine will ultimately look different because the room is much wider (2 sets of French doors and one window in the middle). See the struggle? Haha!
