🔸MUSCLE ENGAGEMENT🔸 Fight the urge to just push or pull, without thought! . I am totally guilty of being sore in places that were not my focus. 🙈When this happens, don’t just brush it off as, “Well, that area must be weaker.” NO! It means You were not engaging the muscle you were intending to strengthen. We tend to just pick weights up and go through the motion, without thought. Let’s change that! . The back is the easiest way to demonstrate the difference between just going through the motion and actually engaging the muscle. When you engage the muscle, your brain is now telling the muscle to react a certain way. This reaction puts tension on the muscle. This is where the magic happens!! Your body is not using muscle memory to push or pull. This mind to body connection is GOLD to increasing strength and muscle growth.💪🏼 . In these demonstrations you first see me just go through the motion (muscle memory). I then show how to engage the muscle for that same exercise. In the first exercise I pull the shoulder blades in, which engages the lats and pulls them together. This is the tension we want! On the next video (straight arm pull down), my triceps do the initial pull to move the weight. 🚫🙈🚫 I was so guilty of this the first year of lifting. My triceps were always sore, and I just thought I was weak. 🤦🏼‍♀️Once I started learning more about muscle engagement, I never had sore triceps after doing this exercise, but my back finally was! 🙌🏼 . Start by just practicing the retraction without completing the full exercise. Trust me, you will still come away feeling like you worked your back! 🚨even people who workout everyday sometimes don’t have perfect form🚨 Thought it was just you? No way! We all struggle with it for different reasons. In this clip, I’m doing a renegade row/mountain climber circuit near the end of my workout. • 💠2 REASONS MY FORM IS OFF💠 1) I need to CONTINUE STRENGTHENING MY CORE!!!!! • •I’m wobbling side to side despite my feet being spread apart or widen my base of support (helps!)>> this is an indicator my core is either not fully engaged or is too weak for the movement/weight intensity. 2) I did this near the end of my workout, if not as my finisher (kind of a blur lol sorry) and therefore, my muscles were fatigued.• • this is also the reason my booty is a little higher in the air than I wish it was for the mountain climbers 🙄 So, YES! We ALL need to keep form in mind no matter how experienced we are in the gym. If you’re unsure about correct form, don’t be afraid to ask a trainer at your gym!! Everyone knows big pecs = big checks. But if you want a big bench, then you’re going to want a big upper back too. This is a good one for building up your back, in a way that’s about as specific to the bench press as possible. Set the bands in a rack so that it’s difficult to get the bar to your chest (without lifting your back off the pad) and try to pause at the bottom for a second.
