I love lights and the night time. Christmas is such a beautiful time of year but it's also such a double edged sword. Sensory wise, Christmas offers so much positive stimulation. Fairy lights, bright colours, decorations, food and Christmas songs all offer positive sensory experiences. However, it can also get pretty overwhelming when the senses can't get a break from it. I have to remember to take extra sensory time and to decorate my house tactically to make sure Noah and I don't get overwhelmed. For decorating, I make sure I stick to a colour scheme so that the decorations aren't too varied. I take down existing ornaments and put the Christmas ones up instead so that I'm not creating a cluttered atmosphere. I love Christmas. It is one of my favourite times of year. However a behaviourist who did a talk I went to stated it perfectly when he said that 'Christmas is the mother of all setting events'. This means that Christmas is an incredibly triggering time of year. The added sensory input combines with changes in routine, a countdown to a single day (which puts a lot of pressure on christmas day), extra socialisation, surprises and changes in regular rules (having chocolate advent calendars in the morning, staying up late for events, trees inside the house etc.). It gets pretty confusing and overwhelming, which can lead to meltdowns. Some ways to help with this are: have a room or space in your house that is Christmas free so there is somewhere to escape the sensory input and pressures. Plan any events well in advance and make social stories. Consider telling the autistic person what they are getting for Christmas presents so they are prepared, or at least give them an idea of the theme (Noah knows his main presents and then I have a few extra surprises). Decorate sparingly and don't use moving or musical decorations. Talk to family members and friends about autism in advance so that expectations on the day are realistic. Have a sensory toolkit ready on Christmas day and take time out whenever needed, make sure there's a designated quiet zone. If anyone has specific problems at Christmas time, feel free to message me and we'll find a solution together.
