The Easy Beats.
The first Australian act to make it internationally. Not only did they pave the way for AC/DC to become the worlds biggest rock band, it was Angus and Malcolm’s older brother George Young who put the band together along with long time song writing partner Harry Vanda and front man Stevie Wright.
Energetic, exciting and one of the first bands to start what would turn in to the Australian sound.
Legend has it Paul McCartney rang a radio station in London after hearing Friday on my mind and asked it to be played again. The song was a major international hit. Bruce Springsteen also did a cover of the song.
Unlike the pride the British have for their Beatles, Australia has largely forgotten just how big and important the Easy Beats had been in 1960’s Australia. I think the sad attitude of our commercial radio has a large part to do with that, but that’s another story.
A great Aussie band of the 1960’s and if you appreciate vintage rock music then check out the standouts below.

This is Amyl And The Sniffers' 'Big Attraction/Giddy Up', a compilation of their first two EPs, on 'Bain Marie Blue's split vinyl limited to ? copies. It's a stone cold fact heard around the world that Australia is a unique country, with a strong sense of patriotism, egalitarianism, and a knack for wry and edgy humour. So what shock is it that that same mentality would leak into Aussie music? Example: Amyl And The Sniffers. Their songs namecheck Caltex and St. Kilda as frontwoman Amy Taylor beckons you to 'rack off, moll'. She's a firecracker of a singer with an intense nasal growl that greatly compliments the ruckus behind her in the mix; guitars like chainsaws and drums like hammers. It's only fitting then that such a nasty gang of musos would falsely start the record's opener 'I'm Not A Loser'. But just a second later we're off, and Amy and her band is assuring you that she's not a cunt nor a fan of tradition. It's hard not to be convinced by song's end. 'Caltex Cowgirl' is a breath of fresh air after the sweat and grit of the songs before it. Melancholic guitars and hushed vocals bring a well earned break from the otherwise volatile side of Amy; indeed here she sounds vulnerable. Lastly, 'Westgate' is a sludgy punk number about a lover scorned. The most disgustingly fuzzy bass you've ever lain ears on opens the track before Amy spits out her chorus; 'I can't touch ya, and I can't call ya/But I can think about you'. It's perhaps a dash of optimism in a dark time, or maybe the thoughts of a clingy creep. Either way, the words will etch their way into your mind for you to sing over and over again. Because amongst all of the catchy lines, the insistent guitar hooks, and the Australian punk atmosphere a la Lobby Loyde and Rose Tattoo, Amyl And The Sniffers are merely earnest musicians playing whatever the hell they like. And they do it with attitude, personality, and a mouth full of beer as they stagger onto the gutter outside.

The Rubens easily delivered a memorable night at Galatos. Have a read of a gig review by The 13th Floor’s Shelley Te Haara with photographs by Ivan Karczewski from Kioui Pix @kioui_pix via the link in Bio 🎸
This winter seems to be about as long as my hairs gotten. I’m ready for green grass and blue skies. 🐶☀️
Down to the bone.
As they themselves say, this is Rock N Roll the way it used to Taste.
Unmistakable Australian hard rock tone. I would describe them as a fusion between modern hard rock and old school 70’s Rock.
Massively underrated and like most Australian rock bands lacking support from radio. Also like most Australian rock bands they are bigger OS than in their home land. You will often find the guys touring festivals in Europe as they take their brand of Rock N Roll to the world.
All their work has a big guitar soundtrack that hooks you right in. It’s hard not to fall in love with some of their work.
Irwin Thomas was for the most part on guitar duty but had recently left the band and Rusty Brown provides great vocals.
Be sure that these guys understand Stage volume, tone and how to rock.
Aside from PRS guitars I’m not sure what other equipment they used to get their fantastic tone but it definitely has some serious bottom end grunt behind it. If I had to guess I’d say there is a Marshall super lead in there for sure along with the only real way to produce that massive presence, Volume!
Let me out

A highly successful album and it sent the band all over the world touring with the likes of Van Halen. It remains one of the highest selling Australian albums of all time.
This one is classic in your face Aussie rock album from start to finish. Hard overdriven tones with real bite and mid range growl backed by hard hitting drums.
Suze DeMarchi on lead vocals and Dave Leslie on guitar. A great band that really understands tone and how to Rock. Still going strong and always put on a great live show.
Some outstanding guitar work and full to the brim with Tone and Marshall bite. Dave actually uses a fantastic new amp called Melbourne Amp Co. More on that tone machine in a coming post. He does the work of two guitarists on their live shows and really manages to keep the band sounding full throughout each song.
Big hits include
Every track is a standout really.
This album should be a must have for any rock guitarist enthusiast.

Without a doubt the most important, influential person and sound on my interest in music, guitars and amplifiers.
Australian rock legend Billy Thorpe and for most part the with the Aztecs.
From 60’s clean cut pop sensation to inventing or at least popularising hard pub rock in the early 1970’s and his influence can be felt in bands like Rose Tattoo, Airborne and Electric Mary today. Any of the live recordings at the Sunbury Rock Festival with Billy standing in front of a wall of 300 Watt Straus Amp’s will demonstrate the beginning of what became Aussie pub rock.
Billy’s tone and performance was at its peak during late 1990s and early 2000’s. He had assembled a new band with some of the best young musicians Australia has. Rose tattoo drummer Paul Demarco and future Rose tattoo guitarist Dai Prichard just to mention a few. He was frequently touring a very hard rock focused set list and most importantly unlike others that end up doing pale and watered down imitations of their own songs, Billy was finding ways to make them faster, harder and louder. Age defying until the end.
This earlier YouTube video from 94 with the Aztecs gives you a snap shot to just how good his sound was.
This clip unfortunately for some reason doesn’t show much of the new track Billy has released that year called RockNRoll City which is a great sounding song and found on the smaller best of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs release available on iTunes.

So tonights leg workout was driven by this Australian rock powerhouse. @fhtts ...this metalcore freight train formed and since their inception they have absolutely blasted the metal tour scene. This 2nd album "Fortitude" is full of deep bass, solid drumming, monstrous guitar work, and bone grinding vocals. But even through all of that these guys still manage to provide great lyrics centering around our fears, our shortcomings, our strengths and our immense will power as human beings. So #passtheauxcord#plugin#listentothemusic and maybe #discover#newmusic#metalcore#rock#slayyourworkout#fhtts#aussierock
