Pumpkin Ale by KBC (Kennebunkport Brewing Co.) in Portland, ME and Memphis, TN is today's review. This is a Trader Joe's store band seasonal beer. Weighs in at 4.5% ABV. Not much info on this beer. The can states it is an Ale with natural flavor (whatever that means). Served at 48F.
Overall Impression: This beer is pumpkin pie all the way. I am not sure if the vegetal flavor is an off-flavor (DMS) or is from actual pumpkin. Either way, because of the nature of this beer, it kind of works. As the beer warms there is a med-low buttery, slick diacetyl flavor rearing its head. The mouthfeel is light and watery. This beer does a fantastic job of tasting like a pumpkin pie but at the expense of its beerieness. The beer character is, for all practical purposes, not present. This would be a good beer to pare with pumpkin pie which would bring out more beer flavor. It's not terrible and I would not send it back but I also would not order another at a bar.
Aroma: Med-high Pumpkin pie spice (nutmeg, cinnamon, clove). Moderate pie crust, and a vegetal pumpkin character. Med-low white pepper spicy and leather.
Appearance: Pours a very clear deep copper with orange highlights. Moderate white head has a creamy consistency with small, tight bubbles. Foam has moderate retention and lacing.
Flavor: Moderate pumpkin pie spice, bready, and pie crust. Lingering aftertaste is a moderate pumpkin pie filling with toasted pie crust. Med-low diacetyl (which gets more pronounced as it warms). Mouthfeel: Light body with moderate carbonation. Med-low alcohol warming.
I don’t generally go for pumpkin beer. In fact, this may have been the second I’ve ever had. But it is tasty. Brewed with 7+lbs of pumpkin plus roasted and raw pumpkin seeds per barrel then conditioned with nutmeg, clove, ginger, allspice, and cinnamon. Really tasty. That said, @elysianbrewing is owned by AB InBev, so I’m kind of torn even posting this. Not that an AB InBev owned craft brand can’t make good beer but because of what the parent company is doing to craft beer distributing. Yeah, this is going to be last Elysian I buy until that changes. #craftbeer (kinda)
