Memories! Can we trust them?
How accurate are our #memories for things we have seen, heard, or felt? How good are we at keeping our accurate memories safe from inaccurate information? The answer is... surprisingly bad!
For the past 30 years many researchers have been exploring something called False Memories. It’s exactly what it sounds like! Memories that are not true.
We often assume that once something is committed to memory, it remains untouched. We pull it out when we need it, and then put it back safely. But memories don’t work like that. Every time we pull a memory out, we change it. Sometimes it’s just reinforcing what was already there, sometimes we lose tiny bits of info, and sometimes false information gets put back in.
They have demonstrated this countless times in the laboratory setting. Sometimes they have people watch a car crash and depending on how they ask a question (how fast were the cars going when they bumped/slammed into each other) actually changes how fast people remember seeing the cars go! In other cases, they have photoshopped people onto a picture of a hot air ballon and told them they went on a hot air balloon ride when they were younger. People later recall this memory! Not just that it happened, but that they remember how it felt, and being nervous in the beginning, etc.
So other than this being totally FREAKY but AWESOME, what are the ramifications?
Well for one, it demonstrated the effects of leading questions, especially for eye witness testimonies. Based on how police officers question witnesses can actually change a witness’s memory of an event. Because of the research done, we can now train police officers, lawyers, doctors (really anyone) on how to try and not implant false information while trying to obtain the truth. Unfortunately, this isn’t always done.
What does this mean for educators? Well for one, we have to be careful about the information we give others. It’s just so easy for people to learn incorrect information. And as teachers, educators, scientists, lawyers, and police officers, we have a commitment to truth!

SWAT team sniper, Dave Sherrard, of Richardson P.D. was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday, February 7th, 2018. At JimWendler.com, we are selling a special 5/3/1 t-shirt to help raise money to help Dave’s family. Read below for more information.
When Dave Sherrard was killed in the line of duty, my wife and I were told of his commitment to his family, his friends and his team. We were also informed of his relentless pursuit to make everyone do the 5/3/1 program. Dave made no secret of his passion of training and the 5/3/1 philosophies. I wonder if his friends would wax poetic about the Conjugate Method, Starting Strength or would occasionally let him know Crossfit was superior, all while trying to keep a straight face. I know I would have.
I'm sure a SWAT team is similar to a football team - the camaraderie and ball busting is over the top. From the outside, it may look hostile but in close quarters, this is how you know you are part of the extended family. I will never know Dave personally but I can safely say that after hearing about him, he and I would have a great time together. And while there is more to life than lifting weights, it is still something that bonds so many of us together. Dave supported me and this is the only way I know how to return the favor. Shirt 1078 and the 5/3/1 Blue Line Hoodie are available on Pre Sale with 100% of all proceeds going to his wife and two daughters. Thank you Dave, for your support and most importantly your service to your community. -Jim Wendler
