DIRECTOR: Levan Gabriadze
CAST: Shelley Hennig
RUNNING TIME: 83 mins
PLOT SUMMARY: A routine Skype call between friends is turned upside down when the ghostly presence of a fellow student who committed suicide 1-year prior joins in with sinister motives.
REVIEW: Watching a teenage girls computer screen for 80 minutes straight without a break - sounds boring doesn’t it?
I was always going to be sceptical watching this because usually films that try to be tech savvy or portray adolescents correctly without being over the top and cliché fall flat.
Well I let myself get properly sucked into this film and by the end I was in complete admiration of not only the scriptwriter, but the young actors that made such a risky concept play out with undeniable cohesion and fluidity.
The most pivotal thing about the cast was their ability to make the nearly hour and a half long Skype call drip with realism – and it really does.
The language, dialogue, quick wit, insults and pace of conversation are all relatable for anyone raised in a tech heavy generation.
The short running time allows for everything to move along nice and quickly so precious minutes aren’t wasted on subjects that are normally stretched thin. In other words, it doesn’t take long for the group to realise that this prank is actually not a prank at all, but the work of a vengeful demon that has the ability to take a life whenever it pleases.
The real star of the movie though, is Blaire (Shelley Hennig). It is her laptop screen we are staring at after all and watching her frantically switch between the Skype call, iTunes, a private conversation with her boyfriend, fear induced Google searches and YouTube clips is really fun and entertaining. She panics, goes into fight or flight, lies and plays into the demons hands at all the right times and her control over the group and complete and utter acceptance of the unreal game of life and death she’s been thrown into is pretty refreshing.
There is adequate violence throughout the film but it relies on much more than gore to carry itself, and rightly so.
