Prison officials are blaming overcrowded conditions and aging facilities that allowed one convict to break out of jail half a dozen times.
Philip Andrew Marshall, who was first incarcerated for evading arrest, has managed to escape from prison on six occasions, according to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office. The last jailbreak occurred on February 15, and the next day Marshall was back behind bars. "It's very frustrating, and it's frustrating sometimes that employees don't do what they're supposed to do,"Bedford County Sheriff Austin Swing told NBC affiliate WSMV.
Swing said Marshall was able to escape after a new jail employee stepped outside of a door without making sure it was locked behind him. The inmate was able to make his way outside with two guards giving chase before he eluded them.
The slippery inmate made two successful escapes last year. In September, Marshall made a break from the Bedford County Workhouse, which was being used as a temporarily holding facility while repairs were being made to the jail.
The next month, Marshall escaped with two other men from the Bedford County Jail. The inmates managed to crawl through an air vent before making their way down the side of the facility using bed sheets. "It's just human error," Swing said. "You'd think common sense would take over. You don't leave a door open in the jail or a door unlocked in the jail." Swing said Marshall only has misdemeanor charges, and was scheduled to be released early next year, but the string of escapes could add a year or more to his incarceration period.
The sheriff explained that overcrowding, an aging structure and being understaffed is largely responsible for the spate of escapes. "We will have to deal with our employees and hopefully get them on track so we don't make these mistakes again," he said.
Construction for a new jail could begin in the next few months, he added.
Milwaukee is making a bid to host the Democratic National Convention in 2020. This would bring more than $200 million dollars of economic activity to the City! This has the chance to be a great opportunity for the city and state.
Shortly after we published a post about Lakewood entrepreneur Faith Day facing down the Food and Drug Administration over a kratom investigation, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in conjunction with the FDA, released a health warning about a "multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections" related to the popular but controversial herbal pain reliever, with one person from Colorado said to be among those affected. And even though Day and the feds have very different views about kratom, some of the concerns voiced by the CDC echo ones she shared with us.
In total, 28 people nationwide are said to have been sickened by Salmonella-tainted kratom. Of those, eleven were hospitalized, but no one has died as a result of such an infection.
As we've reported, Denver Environmental Health prohibited the sale of kratom for human consumption in the city on November 20, 2017, a few days after the FDA distributed its own alert about the substance. That same day, DEH began raiding local shops selling kratom as part of what the department's own board later concluded was a flawed process.
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said allegations of rampant sexual misconduct at the team's workplace were "abhorrent," as the entrepreneur and his NBA franchise come under increased scrutiny after Sports Illustrated's explosive exposé.Cuban told SI the reports were “all new to me." “The only awareness I have is because I heard you guys were looking into some things," Cuban said. "...Based off of what I’ve read here, we just fired our HR person. I don’t have any tolerance for what I’ve read." Cuban said he had not been previously told about any of the accusations and blamed the failure to address the issues on the team's human resources director. “It’s wrong. It’s abhorrent. It’s not a situation we condone. I can’t tell you how many times, particularly since all this [#MeToo] stuff has been coming out recently I asked our HR director, ‘Do we have a problem? Do we have any issues I have to be aware of?’ And the answer was 'No,'” Cuban said.
The SI article published Tuesday alleged misogynistic behavior by several male front office employees -- including ex-Mavericks’ CEO and president Terdema Ussery. “It was a real life ‘Animal House,’” a former employee told SI. “And I only say ‘was’ because I’m not there anymore. I’m sure it’s still going on.” Despite Cuban’s claims he had no knowledge of the “corrosive workplace culture of the Dallas Mavericks,” a few employees told Sports Illustrated the owner knew but turned a blind eye. “Of course Mark knew [about the instances of harassment and assault]. Everyone knew,” one employee said.
One woman, who alleged she endured sexual harassment while working in the Mavericks workplace, said she believed Cuban “turned a blind eye” because the revenue continued to roll in while Ussery worked with the team.
A source told Sports Illustrated the office had a “locker room culture,” yet the “real locker room,” filled with the team’s players, always treated the employees with respect.
A proposed bill to ban non-medically required male circumcision on babies and children in Iceland is receiving backlash from religious communities. "Those procedures are unnecessary, done without their informed consent, non-reversible and can cause all kinds of severe complications, disfigurations and even death," Icelandic Progressive Party MP Silja Dögg Gunnarsdottir said.
She said a child should be old enough to give "informed consent" for the procedure and defended the proposed ban as being about protecting children's rights, adding that it would "not go against the religious right of their parents." The European Jewish Congress condemned the bill, saying the ban would be an "effective deterrent" that would "guarantee that no Jewish community will be established" in the country. "Iceland would be the only country to ban one of the most central, if not the most central rite in the Jewish tradition in modern times," the group's statementsaid, adding that this would "attack Judaism in a way that concerns Jews all over the world." One in three men globally is estimated to be circumcised, with the majority for religious and cultural reasons.
If the ban were to come into effect, it will be a "violation to the right of religious freedom," according to Imam Ahmad Seddeeq of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Iceland, who estimates the country's Muslim community to have "at least" 2,500 members.
NPR's "Take A Number" series is exploring problems around the world — and solutions — through the lens of a single number.
One of the places many people are first prescribed opioids is a hospital emergency room. But in one of the busiest ERs in the U.S., doctors are relying less than they used to on oxycodone, Percocet, Vicodin and other opioids to ease patients' pain.
In an unusual program designed to help stem the opioid epidemic, the emergency department at St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson, N.J., has been exploring alternative painkillers and methods. That strategy has led to a 58 percent drop in the ER's opioid prescriptions in the program's first year, according to numbers provided by St. Joseph's Healthcare System's chair of emergency medicine, Dr. Mark Rosenberg. "There is a complete change in philosophy, a complete change in culture in the department," says Rosenberg, who launched the Alternatives to Opiates program in 2016 with Dr. Alexis LaPietra, the medical director of pain management in the emergency department.
Organizers of a fundraiser featuring Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) reversed course and pulled their plan to auction off an AR-15 rifle — the style of weapon used to kill 17 in last week's school shooting in Parkland, Florida — shortly after a POLITICO report on the event on Tuesday.
After POLITICO contacted the committee on Tuesday afternoon, the Stevens County Republican Party removed mentions of the AR-15 and a plan to offer a Ruger 10-22 .22-caliber rifle as a door prize from the event's website. The organization was still considering how to proceed with the auction, its chair said.
Then, after the POLITICO report was published on Tuesday evening, the committee made a final decision to nix the AR-15.
The northeast Washington state event is set for March 24, the same day surviving students have planned a nationwide demonstration, including a march in Washington, D.C., calling for stricter gun laws. "We want the public to understand that the plan to once again offer this popular item was made prior to the terrible incident in Parkland, Florida, and our initial public advertisement of this event began several days before the shooting. We grieve with the community and the nation. We stand by the 2nd Amendment, but we also recognize that in the current environment, publicizing a means to acquire a semi-automatic AR-15 has the potential to insert more separation into our political discourse. Therefore, we have decided we will not be including this firearm at our event; instead the winner of our final door prize will receive a gift certificate to a local business," said Stevens County Republican Central Committee chair Lori Larsen in a statement to POLITICO.
A Florida legislator’s aide was fired Tuesday after claiming two survivors of the Parkland high school shooting were not students, but instead “actors that travel to various crisis when they happen.” Benjamin Kelly, who worked as district secretary for state Rep. Shawn Harrison (R-Tampa), sent an email to a Tampa Bay Times reporter about Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg, two Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students who had given an interview to CNN.
Gonzalez and Hogg survived the Valentine’s Day massacre at the school that left 17 people dead and dozens of others wounded. Appearing on CNN early Monday morning, the students called for disbanding the NRA and for stricter gun-control laws. “The fact that you were in power for so long, that you had so much influence for so long in America just goes to show how much time and effort we still need to spend on fixing our country,” Gonzalez said of the NRA. “And gun control is just the first thing right now.” According to the Tampa Bay Times, Kelly sent an email to the newspaper’s Washington bureau chief, Alex Leary, writing that the two teens “are not students here but actors that travel to various crisis when they happen.” When the Times asked Kelly to support his claim, he sent a link to a YouTube conspiracy video about Hogg. “There is a clip on you tube that shows Mr. Hogg out in California. (I guess he transferred?),” Kelly said in the email, according to the newspaper.
An article published in the Coral Springs Talk on Feb. 8, six days before the shooting, named Hogg as a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas and featured a documentary he made about efforts by astronomy students to launch a weather balloon and an attached craft into space. Gonzalez was featured in the video as the project’s tracking team leader.
A Hungarian city’s bid to become the European Union’s next “Capital of Culture” was allegedly rejected by EU officials because its video entry showed too many smiling, dancing, white Christians, the city’s mayor says.
Székesfehérvár, Hungary’s ninth-largest city, submitted a short video as part of its entry for the 2023 European Capitals of Culture contest, a competition designed to “celebrate the cultural features Europeans share.”Featuring folk dancers, young couples, mothers, babies and even two elderly gentlemen playing chess in a park, the video was rejected. The EU panel of “independent experts in the field of culture” felt it had too many happy white people and not enough migrants, the city’s mayor Dr András Cser-Palkovics has claimed.
Speaking at press conference after the panel’s ruling, Cser-Palkovics said that his city’s entry never received a fair hearing, and that the panel’s decision was purely political.
According to Cser-Palkovics, one member of the jury of “experts,” whom he identified as a Belgian politician, strongly disapproved of the promotional video, callingit a “propaganda film for white Christian Europe” in which “everyone is white, happy and dancing in the streets.” He said that the panel criticized the film for leaving out “the poor and migrants” while having too many “crosses and churches.” Unapologetic for the video’s content, Cser-Palkovics told Hungarian media that “we love our city with our temples and our crosses. We love being safe, calm, and that people can democratically confess their own values,” adding that he would push for a government inquiry into how the contest is managed. “I would like to bring the matter before the general assembly and inform all members of the board about the style and content of the hearing as well as about practically denying our own culture.” #news#democrat#liberal#politics#republican#government#endthefed#war#profit#health#cannabis#420#law#excutiveorder#congress#dnc#hollywood#drugs#money#globalwarming#foxnews#cnn#indictments#msm#pizzagate
Twitter suspended thousands of accounts overnight and conservatives on the platform aren’t happy about it. Twitter has yet to make a public statement about the issue, but right-wing users believe that they’re being targeted in a mass purge of suspected Russian bot accounts.
Conservative Twitter has even started a hashtag called #TwitterLockOut to talk about the purge, with some claiming that real people (as opposed to bots) were locked out of their accounts. Gizmodo has so far been unable to confirm that any real people have had their accounts mistakenly suspended.
Everyone from well known figures of the alt-right, like neo-Nazi Richard Spencer, to people with Twitter handles like @Isa4031AMP, @DonofJustice, and @Patriotsaviorseem to have been impacted by the move—at least when it comes to their follower counts. The conservatives, (or in Spencer’s case neo-Nazis), claim that they’ve lost hundreds and sometimes thousands of followers overnight.Bill Mitchell, a popular voice on the right who’s known for his controversial tweets defending President Trump, claims that he lost roughly 4,000 followers overnight. Many people who are angry with Twitter are advocating for a move to Gab, a competing social media platform that has become the preferred alternative to Twitter for white nationalists, neo-Nazis, and other folks you probably don’t want to associate with.#news #democrat#liberal#politics#republican#government#endthefed#war#profit#health#cannabis#420#law#excutiveorder#congress#dnc#hollywood#drugs#money#globalwarming#foxnews#cnn#indictments#msm#pizzagate
The vicious MS-13 gang, stifled under former President George W. Bush, exploded during the Obama era fueled by 300,000 illegals, including those given amnesty under the DACA program, and has now been linked to crimes in 22 states, according to a new report.
Since 2012, 207 murders have been tied to the gang called “Mara Salvatrucha,” and there are over 500 cases nationwide of MS-13 members being charged in major crimes, according to the report from the Center for Immigration Studies.
But it can sometimes be hard to deport the illegals involved because about half of the crimes detailed in the report occurred in so-called “sanctuary cities” that do not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
President Trump has pledged to crack down on the gang and deport those in the United States illegally, and report author Jessica M. Vaughan suggested that it can’t happen soon enough.
