Ah I see big finish are slapping another vaguely popular villain from classic who on their new boxset to make anyone buy it. I love big finish to bits but an overreliance on the old is what is so wrong with them, take for example the diary of river song boxsets. If you want me to be engrossed and focus on River, and not market it around whatever classic doctors are in it. There literally hasn't been a series of the 4th Doctor adventures without a classic villain in and fair enough to use daleks, cybermen, sontarans as theyre iconic but the drashings, Kraals and Exillons, really? Take the Confessions of Dorian Gray, big finish' best series and its all original IP, and theres no constant referencing or using source material. Writers get to play around within the format and framework to tell sophisticated and powerful stories with terrific high concept stories like living image, and introspective low concept stories like the immortal game. Why not do this in all your ranges? I mean series 7a has the voc robots, and then 7B, has sutekh in half of its stories. A lot of people do rag on the edas or not bother to listen, but at least they were all for the most part original. I miss the days where Rob Shearman was deconstructing the narrative of the show, Nick Briggs was exploring borderline insane concepts and Gary Russel was being obscure as shit. So to sum up this mini rant, not a fan, stop using the past to sell your sets, do something new. And I love big finish, just saying this annoys me.

Stones of venice wasn't much in the terms of consistent, however the themes and concepts played with are so ridiculous that they become compelling once they're properly explored. I loved the subtle disparaging of religion alluded to through the use of the ridiculous cult, and for once Mark Gatiss' hammy acting was perfectly appropriate as the whole point is to riddicule this cult mentality through the most over the top idea ever, which did end up being fairly funny (if not starting to lose its hilarity by episode 4) and quite entertaining. The Doctor was the only really amazing part of the story and is half of the reason why I ended up quite enjoying this story. I subscribe to the same complaint with this story many people have and thats if it is set in the 23rd century why is absolutely everything archaic. Obviously to have the whole 'venice is sinking' occur it does have to be in the far future but absolutely none of the characters or settings were explained as to why they come from the 17th century. One thing this story gets incredibly well is dialogue and I don't think that a single characters dialogue is written badly. Characters like Pietro and Churchwell did have a little bit too much exposition but I found it harmless and fairly easy to ignore, as if it does feel like too much you stop seeing the character and only see the writer typing the words. Honestly I did enjoy this story from episode 2-4 as they actually felt entertaining and quite compelling and obviously there are a few glaring problems with the story, tonally, narratively, and thematically (it just sort of forgets its a story about cults and religious ideas in the final half of episode 4) but I was still able to be entertained when listening. Final thoughts on this story, although flawed, very flawed actually, it was still an easy listen that offered a set of unique ideas explored fairly well. I didn't feel really any attachment to the characters in this story as they were all somewhat underdeveloped and especially Charley who is usually what saves audios for me added nothing to the narrative. Fun, but forgettable. Final Rating: 8/10

This is a post I've wanted to do for a while so why not now. How would I run big finish if I was in charge? 1. No more monthly range Since about 2015 most of big finish fans I know have been dissapointed or just not bought the monthly range at all. I mean theres over 200 of them and they're all blending into eachother these days. Plus Β£15 a release! Not a lot of people can shell out a few hundred quid for them a year. I'd bring back unbound, and start a few new ranges in its place (an Alex MacQueen master series for example) in the monthly ranges place and experiment a lot more as I think big finish plays it too safe these days. 2. New writers Big finish have really not learned that change is a good thing have they? When Dark eyes came around they got a few new writers in so it felt fresh and it really worked. Wish theyd do the same now as Briggs writing everything is a bit tiring and even if it means bringing in some old classics like Rob Shearman to write some more masterpieces that would help all the ranges feel a bit rejuvinated. 3. More reviving - Doctor who is great, love it to bits, but big finish are amazing when it comes to reviving old shows. Prisoner, captain scarlet, soon to be callan, they are terrific and id invest some more into bringing other cult shows back for the fans dying to see them. 4. Re-realease old audios Although im not a fan of modern monthly ranges, the old ones are stupendous. I would have all of 1-100 released in limited edition cd boxsets for fans who need them, with new covers because the old ones are a bit crap. 5. Have a more concise calendar One thing that annoys me about big finish is how vague they are about release dates. Im currently waiting for war master to be released and all I know is its being released in december. If I were in charge I would always list the week a release was coming out as obviously sometimes theres a delay so giving a specific day is a bit difficult, but an actual idea would be nice. Not to say I don't love big finish as it is, Nick Briggs is doing a terrific job, but these small changes are something I'd ask for as a lifelong fan of the company.

I wanted to like sword of orion, like really really wanted to, my favourite who villains, second favourite Doctor, favourite story format (BUS) so when I finished this one I was simply disappointed. It is a typical run of the mill story, practically just a rerun of tomb of the cybermen with a few altered elements, minus visuals, and simply ripping off a good story doesnt make your story good by proxy. It felt like such a lifeless rehash of ideas used to death, and every single 'surprise' I genuinely guessed about 2 episodes early due to their sheer predictability. I'm trying to see the good and the bad in the story but that's rather hard when the ratio of bad to good is about 4;1. The imagery, cybermen (when they're actually "on screen"), Doctor and Charley are all amazing but sadly they make up about 35% of the story and the rest just left me mildly bored. I don't actively dislike the story, it doesn't offend me like with some stories as it being very early into big finishes history gives it a bit of an excuse but its just such a generic story. Absolutely any villain, daleks, sontarans, krynoid, even the sodding vervoids could've been there in the place of the cybermen and it wouldnt have changed a thing, plus seeing as the cybermen are really barely in the story they might aswell have been. The plot timeline goes as follows: Episode 1: vaguely interesting set up, good character focus and some nice imagery Episode 2: The exact same thing as episode 1 with less interesting characters and shite imagery Episode 3: Cybermen do some evil things, some mysterious schenanigans, I want to drink some alcohol to see if it makes this episode any better Episode 4: What feels like 4 fucking years of exposition and unintersting wrapping up plot threads, then joy that its over It does its own thing and clearly tries to be a fun and engaging listening which is why I respect the story more than I do most bland ones. In conclusion sword of orion has the seeds of an interesting and unique story but sadly does nothing with them which ends up leaving the story feeling rather naff. Again furthering my being completely underwhelmed by 8s run. Final Rating: 7/10

I had no expectations going into storm warning, and all I really wanted was a semi-decent story with an interesting plot and character, and I got that.. sort of. The story goes as follows: Episode 1: A fucking convoluted, heart attack paced, irritating mess Episode 2: So much baiting and exposition I felt that I was being bored into fucking paralysis Episode 3: An intriguing and exciting climax, with some beautiful imagery, fun dialogue and fairly clever concepts Episode 4: An extremely satisfying climax with one of the funniest resolutions in any big finish story ever. So I'm not going to whine on about how it was bad as honestly apart from some terrible plot inconsistencies, tonal issues, and a lack of direction in its first half, I genuinely enjoyed the story. I bloody adored 8 and Charley together from two minutes into their meeting, and can safely say I am absolutely hooked on them as a TARDIS team. My only real issue with them and its a big issue to me, the brevity of their introduction. It was almost like 'hello, I'm the doctor, now we're best friends' and I felt adding a few more minutes to their introduction would have not impacted the story at all and made their first encounter less abrasive. The aliens were perhaps less of a clever concept than Alan Barnes thought they were but the brilliant imagery of the uncreators in part 4 made up for that as the full horror elements of the creatures came into play which was just terrific, its just a shame the engineers and judge or whatever it was called were both so naff. I did love the setting of the R101 as I'm one of those historical nerds who loves the Doctor visting real events in earth history, and the atmosphere was built so well, with some fantastic imagery which is why it annoyed me when for most of the last half of the story we abandoned the brilliantly described airship for a generic alien spaceship and left me wishing we could've seen the triskelee on the R101 instead. Overall a fairly average opening to the first 'season' of eighth doctor audios, with some enjoyable moments and good humor, but overall left me fairly underwhelmed and unenthusiastic about 8s era. Final Rating: 8/10

Best master no doubt, the way he talks so smoothly and silkily, it sends shivers down my spine. His plans are genuinely clever for the first time since Ainley and his dark plans like in eyes of the master show he still has that morbid flare.

This story was always going to be a difficult listen with the recent events involving Bruno Langley, however I was pleasantly surprised by the story. Its hardly the most compelling or outlandish but one thing it does incredibly well is atmosphere, especially the cinema which can even be eeire at times. The whole first half being set in the cinema was good and I was annoyed when we left it for the theatre setting, and the dance hall. The whole time travel concept and the Doctor waiting 30 years was really enjoyable and I love how in character it was for 9 to brush of the fact he spent 30 years on earth waiting for Rose. Adam was always a character I thought had potential and it was nice to see it explored here but I didnt like how the Doctor warms to him yet in the next tv story dislikes him again, as I'm a bit of stickler for continuity. The villains were essentially the gelth but a bit cooler and a fair bit scarier, I would've liked to see some more of them especially as they did posit a credible threat and I was wondering how they would resolve the climax. The ending was a bit of a let down, some bog standard technobabble, then they go off in the tardis, which for a fairly decent story did annoy me. Overall a fairly good story with some decent performances and dialogue, but lacked a consistency in tone and narrative flow that left it feeling a little lackluster. Final Rating: 8/10

Day 29 - Who You Think Should Be The Next Doctor Confessions of Dorian Gray. Privates. Versailles. Merlin. La Ronde. Literally no other choice, he is the best actor in not only wales, the entirety of the UK and possibly the world, no doubt he should be the 14th Doctor in 3/4 years when Jodie leaves. He's just so skilled and has a natural charisma that makes him unbelievably loveable and compelling, and if you listen to big finish you will have heard him in doctor who audios before such as a vampire in the gallifrey series, and captain jack harness in the lives of captain jack set. His crowning achievement (to me) is his 5 series as Dorian Gray in Scott Hancock's phenomenal confessions of Dorian Gray series where he shows he can do dark and introsepctive with ease and to see him bring that to a character like the Doctor would be amazing. #doc#doctor/a> #doctor #who #drwho #cybermen #daleks #tardis #gallifrey #timelords #sarahjane #k9 #sonicscrewdriver #bbcdrwho #bbcdoctorwho #classicwho #classicdoctor #classicdoctorwho #firstdoctor #seconddoctor #thirddoctor #fourthdoctor #fifthdoctor #sixthdoctor #seventhdoctor #eighthdoctor #classdw #torchwood #bigfinish #doctorwhobooks

I almost feel sorry for window on the moor, it was a soiree into my least favorite genre, fantasy, with a writer id never heard off. The odds were really stacked against it from the get go. Personally I cant decide whether I disliked the story or just thought it was mediocre but I can say with clarity that it was definetly not good, it just lacked even one compelling aspect that couldve somewhat made me look more favourably on it. All the characters, the main ones, feel so flat and as lifeless as the background characters. I just didnt feel invested in anything or anyone in this story with the absolute barage of cliches being painful and leading me to just disconnect with the story. Some interesting concepts are proposed like the glass prison but theyre barely followed up on in favour of tracking king whatever his name is, and queen forgettable's every little movement. The resolution was so bland that I have honestly forgotten it, as i have with most of the bland plot. One huge gripe with this story I have is that it promises Emily BrontΓ« yet she doesnt show up till about the 35 minute mark, and even then does absolutely nothing. I was hoping for them to do with her what they did in Mary's story from company of friends, but instead she spouts a little exposition then spends most of the run time off screen doing something technobabbly with the generic characters. Nicks impressions of Rose and 9 are actually fairly good and with a bit of suspension of disbelief you can get quite invested in the Doctor, if it werent for some dreadful characterisation that makes the Doctor seem about as bland an uninteresting as a block of wood. All in all a story that I had my expectations for so low yet still managed to dissapoint, with some interesting moments and creative concepts that get wasted entirely in a bland stereotypical fantasy story. Here's My Review Of The First Story In The 9th Doctor Chronicles - - - This story offended me more than anything, as its premise lies to you entirely. I was promised a newly regenerated 9th Doctor, who is much darker and willing to do anything in a very interesting murder mystery plot. What we got was a campy story evocative of series 2, with some generic replacment for Rose (as he's not met Rose yet) and a rather campy and light-hearted plot. The problem is half a dozen times the dialogue says or even the Doctor himself says hes changed and he's darker, yet he doesnt do a single dark thing the entire episode and it felt even more jokey and childish than most of series 1's TV stories. I did like the referencing of the time war and how it was subtely used, including is the climax of the story, and thought it being so fresh in his mind that the Doctor wouldn't even talk about it was a nice touch. The resolution was the most predictable thing I've ever heard in a big finish audio and due to that it lost entirely all of its dramatic tension, leaving me just going meh. The doctor was characterised really well and I did think that bar some stuff that was too campy, he felt quite interesting of a character and occasionaly had some dark dialogue which left me praying for more which sadly we never got. I thought for a 10th Doctor story this would be absolutely perfect, but for the 9th doctor it was so disjointed from the tone of the TV series and lacked a complex or engaging enough plot, feeling more like a Sarah Jane Adventures plot than anything. Final Rating: 7.5/10
