On October 16, 1968, American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos won gold and bronze medals in the 200 meter sprint in the Summer Olympics held in Mexico City. They raised their fists in a silent protest. They also wore pins from the Olympic Project for Human Rights, a grass roots civil rights organization formed by Olympic athletes. Australian Peter Norman, the silver metalist, wore a pin in solidarity with the movement, as well. All three men were met with derision and mockery and they were expelled from the Olympic Village. Nearly 50 years later, we are still questioning athletes right to protest. Today is day 21 of Black History Month. #tommiesmith#johncarlos#peternorman#ophr#olympicprotest1968#blackhistorymonth#strongertogether#civilrights#civildisobedience#notoracism#theresistance

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY:
1943: Non-violent anti Nazi students in Munich, Germany known as the White Rose Movement were arrested by the Gestapo for distributing anti Nazi propaganda. They were sentenced 5 days later by the “Peoples Court" to death and were beheaded. The “People’s Court” was established by Adolf Hitler in 1934 in order to hastily prosecute and kill enemies of the Nazi war effort without the use of evidence, an impartial judge, a jury, etc.
2017: Donald Trump lead a rally renewing his pledge to repeal Obama Care and build a visible but invisible wall along the Mexican-US border. His offensive, insulting and generally offensive way of speaking and being attended in spades and did SNL writer’s jobs for them.
In case you didn’t know, this year marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act in the UK, which gave women who met certain qualifications the vote in parliamentary elections for the first time. London is celebrating this victory in big ways! Check out the National Trust project, Suffragette City, and the @museumoflondon is running a deeply insightful exhibition, Votes for Women, right now
This deeply saddens me to see the separation and mistreatment of the people of South Africa. Together we will take a stand against the discrimination and dehumanizing policies of the government and fight against racial classification and segregation. #protest#boycott#strikes#civildisobedience
How is it that in 1964, eight years after we celebrated our victory of Browder vs Gayle, that we must still work towards being able to go into the same restaurants. “White only” is unconstitutional and should no longer exist #civildisobedience#gotojail (6/21/64)
After being jailed on July 27th, I have been released. My crime was simply holding a prayer vigil #civildisobedience (8/10/62)
