Noun: A significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people. Oxford Dictionary today announced its word for 2018: Youthquake. Their annual word of choice usually encapsulates the flavour of the year, however, this one holds special significance. Given the tumultuous year that was, they believed it was time to choose “a word we can all rally behind”. The word was first used in the January 1965 edition of Vogue, coined by then editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland to describe the ground-shifting fashion and music movements led by the youth in the Swinging Sixties. As we see significant upheavals in fields of politics, gender and culture across the globe, Youthquake sees itself as a movement not just relevant for the year that was, but for the time to come.
